What is it?
Bun is a JavaScript runtime built from scratch in Zig, designed as a drop-in replacement for Node.js. It bundles a package manager, test runner, bundler, and transpiler into a single binary. Startup times are 4-5x faster than Node, and the built-in package manager installs dependencies faster than npm, yarn, or pnpm.
Why does it matter?
Node.js is 15 years old, and it shows. Bun reimagines the JavaScript runtime with modern assumptions: TypeScript runs natively without compilation, JSX works out of the box, and Web APIs (fetch, WebSocket, ReadableStream) are first-class citizens. For developers tired of configuring transpilers, bundlers, and test runners separately, Bun collapses the toolchain into one thing that just works.
Trade-offs
Strengths:
- 4-5x faster startup than Node.js
- Built-in TypeScript/JSX support — no transpiler config
- npm-compatible package manager that’s absurdly fast
- Built-in SQLite driver, test runner, and bundler
- Drop-in Node.js compatibility for most packages
Limitations:
- Some Node.js APIs still have incomplete implementations
- Smaller community means fewer battle-tested production deployments
- Native addon (N-API) support has occasional edge cases
- Windows support arrived late and still has rough edges
Our take
Bun moved to Trial because it’s crossed the threshold from “interesting experiment” to “viable for production.” We’re running it for internal tooling and dev scripts where startup time matters. For greenfield backend services, it’s worth serious evaluation — the DX improvement is immediate. We’re not yet ready to migrate existing Node.js production services, but new projects should absolutely consider it.
