What is it?

Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal-native AI coding assistant. Unlike IDE-embedded copilots, it operates directly in your shell — reading files, running commands, editing code, and managing git operations as an autonomous agent. It handles multi-file refactors, debugging sessions, and feature implementations that span entire codebases.

Why does it matter?

The terminal-first approach changes the economics of AI-assisted coding. Instead of autocompleting individual lines, Claude Code operates at the task level: “refactor this module to use the new API” or “fix all failing tests.” This makes it effective for the 80% of development work that involves understanding existing code and making coordinated changes across multiple files.

Trade-offs

Strengths:

  • Handles complex, multi-file operations that IDE copilots struggle with
  • Full git integration — creates commits, manages branches, opens PRs
  • Works with any language and framework without plugins
  • MCP server integration for external tool access

Limitations:

  • Requires comfort with terminal workflows
  • Token costs scale with codebase size for context-heavy operations
  • Autonomous operations require trust and review discipline

Our take

Claude Code has become our default for any task beyond simple autocomplete. The ability to hand off a well-defined task — “add error handling to all API endpoints” — and receive a reviewable PR is a genuine productivity multiplier. We moved it to Adopt this quarter after six months of production use across multiple projects.
