What is it?

Cloudflare Workers is a serverless compute platform that runs JavaScript, TypeScript, Rust, and Python at the edge — across 300+ data centers worldwide. Combined with D1 (SQLite database), KV (key-value store), R2 (object storage), and Queues, it forms a complete application platform without traditional server management.

Why does it matter?

Sub-millisecond cold starts eliminate the serverless “cold start tax” that plagues AWS Lambda and similar platforms. For latency-sensitive applications — APIs, auth flows, real-time data processing — Workers deliver consistent performance without provisioning or scaling decisions.

Trade-offs

Strengths:

  • Near-zero cold start latency
  • Global distribution by default (no region selection needed)
  • Generous free tier (100K requests/day)
  • D1, KV, R2, Queues create a cohesive ecosystem
  • Wrangler CLI provides excellent local development experience

Limitations:

  • 128MB memory limit constrains memory-intensive workloads
  • D1 is still maturing (limited query complexity)
  • Vendor lock-in for platform-specific APIs (KV, Durable Objects)
  • CPU time limits (50ms on free, 30s on paid) restrict heavy computation

Our take

We run TechBlips entirely on Cloudflare’s stack — Pages for static content, Workers for API endpoints. For small-to-medium applications that need global performance without DevOps overhead, this is the strongest option available. The ecosystem maturity crossed our comfort threshold for production use in late 2025.
