What is it?
Deno is a JavaScript/TypeScript runtime created by Ryan Dahl (Node.js creator) to address Node’s design mistakes. Deno 2 added full npm compatibility, making it a realistic Node.js alternative. It runs TypeScript natively, uses URL-based imports, and enforces permissions by default — no file or network access without explicit flags.
Why does it matter?
Deno’s security model is genuinely better than Node’s. In a world of supply chain attacks, having a runtime that doesn’t grant file system and network access by default is a meaningful security improvement. With npm compatibility in v2, the “but I can’t use my packages” objection is largely resolved. The built-in formatter, linter, and test runner eliminate toolchain setup entirely.
Trade-offs
Strengths:
- Secure by default (explicit permission flags for fs, net, env)
- Native TypeScript execution without configuration
- npm compatibility in v2 removes the biggest adoption barrier
- Built-in tooling (fmt, lint, test, bench, doc)
- Fresh framework for full-stack web applications
Limitations:
- Some npm packages still have compatibility issues (native addons)
- Deployment ecosystem is thinner than Node.js
- Deno Deploy is the only first-class hosting option
- Team familiarity is a real migration cost
- Permission flags can be tedious for development (most devs just use
--allow-all)
Our take
Deno stays at Assess. The runtime is technically excellent, and Deno 2’s npm compatibility solves the practical adoption problem. But the ecosystem — hosting options, framework support, community resources — is still significantly smaller than Node’s. We’d recommend it for new projects where the security model matters (handling sensitive data, running untrusted code) and for teams that value a zero-config TypeScript experience. For general web development, Node or Bun remain safer bets.
