What is it?
v0 is Vercel’s AI-powered UI generation tool. Describe what you want in natural language — “a pricing page with three tiers and a toggle for monthly/annual billing” — and it generates React components using Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui. You can iterate on the output conversationally and export the code directly into your project.
Why does it matter?
UI development has always been the bottleneck between “I know what I want” and “it’s actually built.” v0 compresses that gap for standard UI patterns. Landing pages, dashboards, forms, and data tables that used to take hours now take minutes to prototype. For teams without dedicated designers, it’s a legitimate force multiplier.
Trade-offs
Strengths:
- Generates production-quality React + Tailwind + shadcn/ui code
- Conversational iteration lets you refine designs quickly
- Exports clean, copy-pasteable components
- Good understanding of common UI patterns and layouts
Limitations:
- Generated code often needs restructuring for real component architecture
- Complex interactive behavior (drag-and-drop, virtualized lists) is hit-or-miss
- Assumes shadcn/ui and Tailwind — other design systems require manual adaptation
- Can produce visually appealing but accessibility-poor markup
Our take
v0 earned its Trial spot because it genuinely saves time for the right use cases. We use it for rapid prototyping and getting a visual starting point for new features. The key is treating its output as a first draft, not production code — expect to restructure components, add proper state management, and fix accessibility. Don’t use it as a crutch; use it as a starting gun.
